Question for hardware gurus

Postby Laby » Sun Jul 08, 2012 10:39 am

Yop guys,

I may buy a new computer soon enough (depends of my money, like anyone I guess). I got a good partnership from my school to get some discounts on Dell pro laptop (vostro/latitude/precision) and I was aiming for a latitude one.

The main problem is about the graphic card. No choice for it, It should be a NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 5200M.

I know nothing about pro cards, and I don't even know if it would works with games (obviously, lineage 2).

Anyone can give me some information about this card ? Any thoughts ?

Ty !

It will suck for L2 or any games for that matter.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-NVS ... 732.0.html

It is equiv of slightly below 620m performance-wise.

The way NVIDIA and ATI sell their workstation graphics cards is that their normal graphics cards are gimped in geometry performance and various other ways.

This allows them to sell ridiculously bad cards for production work because you just can't get much performance out of say a 580GTX compared to a Tesla which uses the exact same chip.

Of course if you're just going to play at lowest possible details in L2 then your CPU will eventually always be the bottleneck unless your graphics card has low memory bandwidth and/or a video ram.

NVIDIA-NVS-5200M happens to have horrendous memory bandwidth as well, however it seems to have 1024 MB of video ram, therefore you can change your l2.ini cache settings to 900mB or higher to make the overall experience have less dips to less than 1 frame per second.

As a pro tip, if you want to play Lineage 2 a lot smoother get an SSD...
Trust me, the difference is ultra notorious in this game, specially in over populated areas.

It is :D

Since the creation of this topic I changed several time my hardware. Lastly I was running game on a SSD (Vertex 2) with 8GB Ram, a GeForce 650M GT and a i7 3630QM. It was decent during mass pvp :)

Running 2x nVidia 760Ti, and 8 core at 2.4GHz and my dual core 3Ghz laptop runs L2 better than gaming PC, just because I'm using SSD there... So gfx card is not a factor

Actually it might be the faster cpu in your laptop that does it :)

In L2 u want fast cpu (dualcore is best) with high ipc. That means Intel sandybridge and forward is the best to get.
Adding more cores will only make it slower.
Also adding more ram so u dont need virtual ram is good.

I am playing with 3 year old laptop. You need only good CPU, good HDD (no, HDD is bad you need SSD at any case) and enough RAM.

I know how it all works :) it's just comparison between two systems to show people, what is better for this game

trying to build a silent pc as my girlfriend hates the noise it makes and at the same time upgrading my old cpu so here is what I've found so far ^^

cases:
- Fractal Design Define R4 Titanium Grey Low Noise Mid Tower Case
http://www.fractal-design.com/home/prod ... ine-series

cpu coolers:
Scythe Mugen 4, PC Games Edition.

power supply
FSP Raider 750W Quiet PSU, 80+ Bronze
or
FSP Aurum 750W CM Quiet Modular PSU, 80+ Gold

SSD
OCZ Vertex 460 - 240GB
- optional as I might just keep use my current SSD, an OCZ Vertex 120

RAM
Corsair Vengeance Pro 2133-8GB (2x4GB)

CPU
Intel Core i3-4360,s1150
- is there any better CPU for L2 ?

Motherboard
MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming,s1150
or any you can recommend

will keep use my old video card (GTX 470) as for L2 I don't think I'll see much performance improvement anywayz on that area..
