Graphic card upgrade for smoother framerate

Graphic card upgrade for smoother framerate

Postby Hayachan » Fri Feb 17, 2017 5:26 pm

Hi,

I am using gtx 970 with a 1080p 144hz screen atm and sometime i notice stuttering in city and boss fight,
This make me want something with a little more power to improve the gaming experience,
I am looking at investing Gtx1070 to play with my current screen or should i go all out and buy Gtx 1080 with 1440P 144hz screen?

Cheers

Do you have Lineage 2 installed on an SSD?

If not do it, keeping your current GPU.

The game is old, trying to load everything from hard drive, so a fast drive helps a lot.

My GTX970Ti is doing just fine for L2 and many many other games. Never got any fps issues, not even with 3 accounts open on busy siege, Lindvior etc.
Sounds like a vSync issue to me.

A long time I'm using GTX560 and recently buying GTX1060, well, GPU doesn't affect to the performance in L2.
Only CPU and hdd/ssd speed.
As @Lineage note, L2 very old game and can't use many processors, just one. You can achive more profit with SSD and max Processor Frequency. For example Intel i7 6700K 4.0GHz, where 'k' mean - you can overclocking frequency, and got more profit in L2.

L2 based on Unreal Engine 2 from 2001-2002 years. The core of UE2 remains unchanged with bugs, but in GoD NC use some hard addon/patch to UE2 and UE2 become to humburger. Remember that https://youtu.be/CQ2qiY5AndQ?t=4m49s :D ?

Open MSI Afterburner, watch gpu usage. Does it hit 100%?
Yes: You need new gpu.
No: You dont need new gpu.

I doubt things has changed since I stopped playing so best solution is to get cpu with highest IPC and corespeed on 1-2 cores.
So its pretty much always the latest i5 from Intel thats the go to thing for L2 (single client, for 3+ clients id pick an i7).

speaking of which but seeing the latest SSD developments is there any real noticeable effect in L2 (or any other games for that matter) by upgrading the below SSD which has 540MB read to the latest Samsung ?

OCZ Vertex 460 - Solid state drive - 240 GB - intern - 2.5'' - SATA-600
versus
Samsung 960 Pro SSD, 512 GB, PCI-Express 3.0 x4, Samsung Polaris, 3500 MB/s, 2100 MB/s, M.2 2280

read some stuff about it online and most people say you will not see any real huge noticeable improvements ?

SSD only has benefit over HDD for L2 because of more read actions per second from SSD.
All you need for L2 is good single core processing (i3, i5 4450 series) and minimal 4GB RAM per client. Hyper-Treading, i7 and everything similar is just being ignored by the old game architecture.

The gain is more in random 4k and queue depth reads than readspeed. But you will possibly cut 1-3seconds on loadingplaces (if the textures are huge).
But with decent ram (16GB) and superfetch its even smaller gain because almost whole game can be loaded in ram.

So it will depend if you want to load into a zone potentially 1-3 seconds faster first time. I haven't had a game on a SSD in last 5 years, just now have it because its cheap (mx300 525GB).
I did run my L2 on SSD though, didn't have miracle keyboard that could do spells while im in blackscreen so had to load faster.
